During the current period of heavy rainfall, residents of Cape Town have been reminded to report sewer overflows and other water and sanitation-related issues through official channels provided by the City.
The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate urged residents to report all issues through these channels so that problems can be addressed as soon as possible.

The City emphasised the importance of residents acting as its ‘eyes and ears’ on the ground, reporting any water and sanitation concerns or defects.
Councillor Zahid Badroodien, the City’s mayoral committee member for water and sanitation, emphasised the importance of logging water and sanitation service requests so that they can be addressed as soon as possible.
‘We need residents to be our eyes and ears on the ground to report concerns and defects so they can be addressed by our relevant maintenance teams,’ said Councillor Badroodien. ‘With WhatsApp being so easily accessible and convenient to most, reporting these incidents is only a couple of clicks away.’
Councillor Badroodien requested that residents provide a description of the issue and its location, as well as upload photographs, to help teams resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
Residents were also reminded of the City’s current influx of complaints related to the recent heavy rain and damaging winds.
The teams in charge of addressing these issues have encountered difficulties in responding to service requests on time due to factors such as traffic delays and incidents caused by inclement weather.

How residents can help water and sanitation services
- Only flush human waste and toilet paper.
- To dispose of your waste, use the City’s solid waste services rather than drains. Waste that enters sewer pipes clog, strain and damage the infrastructure associated with sewage conveyance and treatment throughout the City, such as pump stations and WWTWs, which are very expensive to repair.
- Check for illegal stormwater-to-sewer cross-connections on properties where rainwater is channelled into sewer drains from roofs, gutters and paved or hard yard surface areas. Sewers overflow due to the ingress of rainwater and items such as litter, material, builders’ rubble, fats and sanitary ware, especially when it rains.
- Report sewer blockages and overflows so that they can be cleared as soon as possible, given the current power situation.
- Report sewage reticulation system vandalism.
