Amid December’s raging wildfires, a citizen alerted the Cape of Good Hope SPCA to a homeless man carrying a tortoise inside a plastic bag and then subsequently discarding it into a recycling bin.
The report launched an immediate rescue effort under Inspector Werner Taljaard’s direction, who gently rescued the tortoise from the bin.
The SPCA assumes the tortoise initially climbed into the plastic bag to seek refuge from the raging fires.
The tortoise was taken to the SPCA’s Wildlife Department, where it received a thorough assessment before being released back into its natural environment.
The SPCA’s Wildlife Department receives approximately 19 tortoises per month that are either surrendered by people or confiscated by the SPCA or provincial wildlife conservation authorities due to being kept in unsuitable conditions for tortoises.
