Two suspects have been sentenced to life imprisonment on two separate occasions by the Parow Regional Court on rape charges, according to a recent press statement issued by the SAPS.

Gilbert Botha (38) was arrested after he raped a 9-year-old girl that was visiting her grandmother’s house, on 1 August 2016. At about 12pm, Botha called her into her brother’s room, where he assaulted her.
He was found guilty by the Parow Regional Court on 3 April 2024 on the rape charge and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
In a separate incident on 21 October 2021 at around 5:30pm, a 29-year-old woman was assaulted with a spade by her boyfriend, Luzavain Van Niekerk (25), and he raped her soon after.
He then transported her to a dump site, where he left her. Van Niekerk was arrested shortly after the incident.
Van Niekerk was found guilty by the Parow Regional court and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on the attempted murder charge and life imprisonment on the rape charge.
The operations were conducted by detectives attached to the Delft Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
