The month-long window in which parents and guardians needed to apply for a place for their children in schools across the Western Cape for the 2024 academic year officially closed on Friday.
Those who may have missed the deadline for school placement applications are still able to do so, says the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). However, these applications will be flagged as late and will only be considered by schools after all on-time applications are dealt with.
The deadline for late applications is Thursday, 25 May 2023.
Parents and guardians can visit wcedonline.westerncape.gov.za to apply.
During the application period, the WCED reported having received a total of 503 763 individual applications for placements and transfers to schools for the 2024 school year.
With parents applying to multiple schools for their children, a total of 156 150 applications were received.

Now, schools have just over a month to consider all the applications they have received.
The WCED says it is working towards parents seeing the outcomes of their applications online from 29 May 2023, but will confirm this closer to the end of May.
Parents and guardians are reminded that certified hard copies are not required at this stage. Certified hard copies are only required once an offer from a school has been received and accepted as their final choice.
In order to ensure a smooth start to the 2024 academic year, the WCED urges parents and guardians to accept or decline successful offers as quickly as possible.
If no offer is confirmed, the system will automatically confirm the top-ranked school that has made an offer and remove the rest so those places can be offered to other potential students.
‘Parents who do not receive an offer of a place should not be disheartened: places always open up as parents confirm their final choices. We will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to place every learner whose parents applied on time as quickly as possible,’ concludes the WCED.
