Cape Town’s art scene is seeing a cool collaboration between lens-based artist Lien Botha and painter Jaco van Schalkwyk. These two artists, both with a longstanding connection to Barnard Gallery, are joining forces to present an exhibition that explores conservation, nature and storytelling through visual imagery.
The inception of this collaboration can be traced back to a conversation initiated by Barnard Art Director Alastair Whitton in February 2023. The result is an exhibition titled ‘After Nature,’ where Botha’s photography and digital media narratives merge with van Schalkwyk’s paintings to create thought-provoking visuals.
The foundation of this joint venture is rooted in the artists’ shared passion for conservation and the environment. According to Van Schalkwyk, their connection goes beyond their creative processes to a profound understanding of each other’s work.

He describes the exhibition’s title as multi-layered, suggesting interpretations ranging from post-apocalyptic scenarios where humanity’s impact on nature is irreversible to the concept of painting ‘after nature’ itself – the art of imitating the natural world.
The artists’ mutual admiration for storytelling through visual art is the cornerstone of ‘After Nature’. Van Schalkwyk, renowned for his realistic paintings, highlights how his process starts with photography as he captures his surroundings, creating references for his works.
Botha, on the other hand, uses photography and post-production digital techniques to create the final pieces.
The colour palette of the exhibition, predominantly monochrome with hints of blue, sepia, and black and white, enhances the otherworldly atmosphere of the artworks. This choice lends a sense of novelty and a feeling of stepping into an uncharted realm.

Lien Botha’s works are known to reflect a poetic longing and a sense of dislocation that mirror the historical references associated with land and belonging.
Jaco van Schalkwyk, often identified for his interest in the natural world, documents the intricate relationship between mankind and nature. His paintings, reminiscent of 19th-century Romantic landscapes, capture both the beauty of nature and the devastating impact of human activity.
