Opera UCT, the renowned opera school at the University of Cape Town (UCT), and Cape Town Opera (CTO) have joined forces to present a spectacular reimagined version of Giuseppe Verdi’s classic opera La Traviata at the Artscape Theatre.
This enchanting production is led by acclaimed theatre-maker, designer and playwright Mari Borstlap and conducted by Professor Jeremy Silver, the director of Opera UCT.
The show boasts not one, but two dynamic casts, each featuring a blend of exceptionally talented singers from Opera UCT and CTO.

La Traviata originally premiered in Venice in 1853, and it has since earned its place as one of the most frequently performed operas worldwide, known for its standout arias and captivating storyline.
The opera revolves around the life of Violetta, a glamorous courtesan in 19th-century Paris who finds herself entangled in a profound love story with a young nobleman, Alfredo. As their love defies societal norms, their relationship encounters obstacles and dilemmas.
The production features Opera UCT alumni and CTO House soloists, including Brittany Smith as Violetta, Lukhanyo Moyake as Alfredo and Conroy Scott as Germont.

This talented trio will share the stage with Opera UCT’s rising stars: Ondelwa Martins as Violetta, Sakhumzi Martins as Alfredo and Siphe Kwani as Germont, all of whom are currently pursuing postgraduate diplomas in music performance.
Siphe Kwani, one of the young talents in the production, expressed the significance of Opera UCT’s training, saying, ‘I have never performed the full opera of La Traviata before, but growing up in the local choirs, we used to sing some of the chorus pieces for choir competitions.’
