Ever since 1977, the The International Council of Museums (ICOM) has celebrated International Museums Day annually in or around 18 May. All around the world, museums participate in this event in order to raise awareness of just how important museums are to culture and the development of a society. Every year, more and more museums around the world participate in International Museums Day, hosting special events in honor of this important day, and we’re excited to see several South African museums joining in.
As per tradition, each year has a specific theme. For 2022, the theme is ‘The Power of Museums’.
Here is a brief rundown of the participating museums and other International Museums Day events in the Western Cape:
1. Castle of Good Hope
In honor of International Museums Day, the Castle of Good Hope will host a Dutch and South African Business Networking session for the Camissa Museum.
While you’re there, you can also visit the William Fehr Collection that is co-exhibited at the Castle of Good Hope and Rust en Vreugd. The Castle houses the components of oil paintings, furniture and decorative arts from the collection. Or go on a guided tour led by an experienced guide, or attend the daily Key Ceremony or Canon Firing.
