Following a slip-and-fall incident that resulted in an injury, Dulcie Rathbone, a 101-year-old Eleanor Murray resident fondly known as Aunty Peggy, found herself in desperate need of a new wheelchair. Responding to this need, the retirement home took to the People’s Post in an appeal to the public.
Denise Vigus, an administrator at the residence, informed the People’s Post that, after the accident, Rathbone was promptly taken to the hospital, where her cracked femur was successfully repaired. Following a week of hospitalisation, she was discharged, but her mobility had been significantly affected by the injury.
Touched by Aunty Peggy’s story and her resilient spirit, the Eleanor Murray Residence has received a donation of a brand-new wheelchair.

The residence published the following message of gratitude on its Facebook page:
‘We had quite a response to our plight for a wheelchair for Aunty Peggy, our 101-year-old resident. Thank you so much for this. Thank you, People’s Post Woodstock/Maitland, and Kaylynne Bantom, for placing the article in the People’s Post on 1 August 2023.
It is so heartwarming to know that there are people who care. Thank you so much, Bok Radio, BokTv, and Wilinda Ford, for donating a brand new wheelchair to Aunty Peggy.
We bless you all for playing such an amazing and wonderful part in donating Aunty Peggy’s beautiful red 4×4 wheelchair (in Wilinda’s words).
Aunty Peggy was so excited about this chair. We cannot say thank you enough.’
