To rescue 400 donkeys from the clutches of cruelty and exploitation, The Karoo Donkey Sanctuary is launching ‘The Big ASS Trek,’ a journey relocating rescued animals from Plettenberg Bay to Prince Albert in the Greater Karoo.
This initiative not only addresses the urgent need for intervention in the face of the donkey slaughter crisis but also sheds light on the broader context of animal atrocities, urging a collective shift towards animism.
Animism is an interconnected worldview that recognises the intrinsic value of all beings. Shifting collective consciousness towards animism becomes paramount to fostering a harmonious relationship between humans and animals.

The alarming surge in donkey theft, brutal bush-slaughter and skinning, fuelled by the demand for donkey skins in China, poses a significant threat to global donkey populations. The Karoo Donkey Sanctuary’s mission to rescue and relocate these creatures becomes increasingly crucial as the world faces a silent pandemic of animal cruelty.
Founded by animist Jonno Sherwin, The Karoo Donkey Sanctuary has been a beacon of hope for over 500 emaciated donkeys and 150 horses destined for slaughter. Through re-homing initiatives and public support, the sanctuary has successfully saved and found loving homes for hundreds of animals, with a current permanent herd of 130 donkeys.
The Karoo Donkey Sanctuary’s impact extends beyond rescues; they played a crucial role in closing Africa’s largest donkey slaughterhouse and securing a government ban on the trade in Northern Tanzania. The organisation is dedicated to fostering a mutually beneficial relationship between donkeys and humans through outreach programmes and education.

The Great ASS Trek involves transporting animals, shelters, equipment and staff across 260 kilometres of challenging terrain.
The sanctuary extends heartfelt thanks to individuals and organisations, especially the Olsen Animal Trust in the UK, for their generous support. As they embark on this ambitious journey, The Karoo Donkey Sanctuary calls on the public to contribute through volunteering or donations to ensure the safety and well-being of the animals.
