Organised by non-profit organisation #AgainstPeriodPoverty in collaboration with the City of Cape Town Cycle Team, a mass community of all ages and fitness levels will take to the streets of the Greater Strandfontein area, collecting much-needed sanitary products for distribution around the province.
According to News24, the collaborators are estimating more than 100 cyclists will join the event this Sunday.
‘Please come out and support us by cycling or cheering us along the route to create awareness around period poverty,’ said Westridge local Lindsay Adams, who founded the NGO after hearing about the plight of two girls in her community in 2019.
‘The stories you hear. These girls are using rags, newspaper and toilet paper. This catapulted me into action,’ explained Adams at the time. ‘I need to do something because not all of us are fortunate to have these things. It is not a luxury, it is a necessity.’

With no pre-registration required, event organisation will take place ahead of the cycle at the Strandfontein Sports Complex, People’s Post reported.
Entry to the cycle event remains open to all and will cost five packs of sanitary pads.
‘We are not asking for money and it does not matter if it is an R5 pack or a R50 pack, we are collecting this for the girls,’ the publication quotes Adams as saying. ‘We are welcoming all bikes and all ages. Families, work groups, anyone wearing any kit.’
The 13-kilometre route will start and end at the Strandfontein Sports Complex. The charity event will see cyclists making their way along Baden Powell Drive via Old Strandfontein Road and into Spine via Witsands before travelling into Dennegeur Avenue via Church Way and back into Spine. The route loops twice before returning to the sports field.
There will be no road closures, but the City’s law, safety and security teams will be on hand to assist and ensure safety.
For those not cycling but still wanting to join the initiative, collection bins will be available for sanitary goods along the water points and at the sports complex.
