The year 2023 was a busy one for Cape Town. Among many other events, the City hosted Africa’s first Netball World Cup, the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, its inaugural Formula E race, the Loeries Creative Week and the Tweede Nuwe Jaar Minstrel Street Parade.

The City of Cape Town’s Events Permit Office played a key role, green-lighting over 1 200 events throughout the year. This line-up included major international sports events, premier music concerts and numerous lifestyle and cultural happenings. The City’s Events Support Process contributed significantly, aiding more than 170 events.
Research on three key events revealed a R2 billion economic impact. This figure represents direct and indirect economic benefits and destination marketing.
Just 20 events generated an additional R1.9 billion in direct economic activity, with revenue stemming from expenditures by attendees, participants and event organisers.
Attendance figures were equally impressive, with over 1.3 million people engaging in the top 40 events.
These events have proven to be pivotal in stimulating growth in various sectors, including accommodation, food, travel, retail and tourism. A significant majority of event organisers opted for local suppliers for various services, thus bolstering the local economy.

Alderman JP Smith, the City’s Mayco member for safety and security, noted the diligent work of event organisers and the City’s Events Department, stating, ‘Event organisers have worked hard over the last 15 months with support from the City’s Events Department to get the events back in the direction we were headed before the pandemic. We would like to salute all involved for their hard work.’
The top 20 events of 2023 also created over 26 000 job opportunities in various fields like security, catering, logistics and transportation.
Looking ahead, 2024 promises to be another exciting year for Cape Town’s event landscape, kicking off with the Tweede Nuwe Jaar Minstrel Street Parade and the SA20 Final at Newlands.
The line-up to come included the Cape Town Carnival, Africa Travel Week, Comic Con Cape Town and a much-anticipated rugby clash between the Springboks and the All Blacks at DHL Stadium.
