Despite a decrease in annual cases of children left on the beach, the Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) urges parents and caregivers to remain vigilant when out in public spaces with children as the start of the 2024 school year draws near.

‘The beaches are still packed, therefore constant vigilance is required. Please adhere to the law and refrain from drinking in these spaces, especially where young children are present and require attention,’ says Provincial Minister of Social Development Sharna Fernandez.
‘If you are returning to work, please ensure your child is in the care of a trusted individual who will keep a watchful eye over them,’ Fernandez adds.
In its first week, the City of Cape Town’s child safety project, Identikidz, led to a total of 38 children being reunited with their families.
The DSD said that, in addition to various incidents of alleged neglect and abuse attended to by staff in parts of the city, eight children were reported as separated from their families in various areas in the Cape Metro and reunited by DSD staff between 15 December 2023 and 1 January 2024.
‘Compared to last year during the same period, there were thankfully fewer cases of children needing to be relocated in places of safety as a result of being left on a beach,’ the DSD said in a statement. ‘However, caution is still required.’

DSD’s caregiver tips to keep children safe:
- Ensure that your child knows their own full name, your full name, address and contact number. If they are lost, this information can be vital in quickly tracing the parents or caregivers.
- Always know where your children are and who they are with. When leaving children with other adults, whether they are family, friends or neighbours, ask them to inform you if they intend to leave the premises
- Ensure that your children, particularly young children, are supervised at all times. Accidents can happen very quickly. Whether it’s near a body of water, out at a park, or inside a house, please always be vigilant.
