To mark the official countdown to the 2023 Netball World Cup, Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde and Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, together with Netball South Africa, officially launched “Netball Fridays” in the Western Cape.
Netball Fridays aims to encourage everyone to dress up in their supporter’s outfits every Friday to show their support for the South African team as the countdown to this prestigious event commences. The province will be hosting the tournament next year and residents are encouraged to join in and celebrate Netball Fridays.
Winde said for the first time in the Netball World Cup’s history, it will be taking place on the African continent, and the Western Cape will represent South Africa by hosting it. “This is a massive achievement for us and it was great to be a part of #NetballFriday today as we gear up for the World Cup. The World Cup enables us to drive economic growth and promote private sector-led job creation. This is because our tourism and hospitality sectors thrive during international events. We look forward to welcoming athletes and spectators to our province!”
Marais said they are excited to be hosting the 2023 Netball World Cup as this will bring renewed interest in the sport but also an economic boost to the province. “I hope that everyone in the Western Cape will join us in building up to the tournament and that we will all come out in numbers to support our Proteas team in the tournament,” she said.
