This weekend, a group of divers will plunge into the Two Oceans Aquarium’s I&J Ocean Exhibit for a full 24-hour dive-athon, all for a good cause.

The scuba diving relay kicks off from noon on Saturday, 6 April until noon on Sunday, 7 April, aiming to raise funds for the conservation and education work of the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation.
The UCT Underwater Club’s Diver24 fundraising initiative is hosted by the Two Oceans Aquarium Dive School. ‘Diver24 is close to our hearts at UCT Underwater Club,’ say Ashton Rodger and Dana Chiles, both members of the UCT Underwater Club.
‘It’s about rallying together as a community to make a real difference. The ocean’s our lifeblood, and we see it as our duty to help safeguard its future and get future generations stoked about protecting it.’
‘This event isn’t just a blast; it also connects the diving and student crew with the public, letting us share our passion. We reckon the ocean is where humanity finds its mojo.’

The Aquarium has been the home of Diver24 since 2017, with a helping hand from the Aquarium’s PADI-certified Dive School and the University of Cape Town.
Visitors can swing by and witness the divers in action and they can even have a chat with students in the public part of the exhibit.
The funds raised this year will support the Two Oceans Aquarium’s sea turtle rescue, rehab and release efforts, and sponsor an opportunity for Grade 8 and 9 learners from under-resourced schools to dive into a marine sciences programme.
‘Diving opens up a whole new world below the surface,’ says Two Oceans Aquarium Marketing Manager Devon Bowen.
‘But one thing that’s crystal clear is how delicate our ocean ecosystem is. If we want to keep enjoying the ocean and ensure our kids can too, we’ve got to school-up our future leaders and community members about their role in this world and how to safeguard it.’
‘It’s always a pleasure teaming up with UCT’s young guns toward this mission, and I can’t wait to see them in action at Diver24.’
