In November, the iconic Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel in Cape Town, is set to host its annual event known as Confections X Collections (CxC). Over five days, CxC will feature exclusive salon-style fashion shows paired with designer-inspired sweets, bringing together fashion and confectionery in an exquisite fusion.
From 8 to 12 November 2023, the Mount Nelson will be putting on two fashion shows per designer at 11am and 3pm. The event promises to shine a spotlight on the burgeoning world of African fashion, emphasising the values of slow, deliberate design.
The lineup for this year’s CxC features renowned fashion designers hailing from Southern and Western Africa.

Gracing the CxC stage are Capetonians Chu Suwannapha, also known as the ‘Prince of Prints,’ representing Chulaap and Sindiso Khumalo, an internationally acclaimed designer who clinched the 2020 LVMH Prize.
Joining them are Bubu Ogisi of IAMISIGO, based in Nigeria, dedicated to preserving ancestral textile techniques; Adeju Thompson, the founder of Lagos Space Programme; and Palesa Mokubung’s Mantsho, a Johannesburg-based brand known for its bold and print-centric garments rooted in African indigenous culture.
Adding a sweet twist to the event, the Mount Nelson’s pastry chef, Vicky Gurovich, will collaborate with each designer to craft bespoke confections that will entice the taste buds and elevate the hotel’s traditional afternoon tea experience.
The event’s curation is a product of a partnership between the Mount Nelson and Twyg, an independent magazine operating at the intersection of fashion and sustainability.
Jackie May, the founder and editor of Twyg, expressed her excitement, saying, ‘Being involved in CXC from its inception has been such a privilege. This year, we’re excited to be showcasing homegrown talent as well as two West African slow-fashion designers. For the second year running, we are highlighting the work of those who are championing a culture of care, honouring their artisans and celebrating African fashion.’
Mount Nelson’s general manager, Tiago Moraes Sarmento, remarked, ‘Set in the vibrant heart of Cape Town, it’s only fitting that we shine a spotlight on the city’s buoyant creative spirit, from the arts and fashion to culinary delights. Challenging Africa’s leading fashion designers is just one of the ways in which we’re doing this.’
In anticipation of its 125th anniversary in 2024, The Nellie is gearing up to solidify its position as the cultural heart of Cape Town.
The hotel plans to launch an annual programme of celebratory events spanning arts, design, gastronomy and fashion, further cementing its legacy in the city.
