The Overstrand Municipality has issued a full evacuation order for Pringle Bay as the Hangklip fire, which has been raging since yesterday, intensifies. Residents are urged to evacuate their homes for their safety immediately.
As of now, the blaze has spread rapidly, necessitating the evacuation of the entire village.
Overstrand Municipality has established Kleinmond Town Hall as the emergency evacuation centre. The facility welcomes residents and their pets.
At 12:30pm today, a code red was declared. Households in Brodie Link were the first to receive evacuation instructions, with other areas near Pringle Bay being closely monitored for mandatory evacuation.
Residents are advised to follow updates from local authorities to ensure their and their families’ safety during this emergency.
Further assistance and instructions will be provided as the situation develops.
‘Colleagues, as you can see, it doesn’t look pretty. The wind is playing havoc with our teams. First, it comes up, then it goes down. I am quite concerned, and the fire chief is with me, about where the wind is going to take us.’
She continued, ‘I am not exactly sure how many people have evacuated, as many would prefer to stay home or go to their families. I am also a little concerned about those who only have holiday homes here and that they in fact may not know that it is problematic.’
Donations for firefighters, volunteers, and emergency and traffic personnel can be dropped off at the Hermanus Fire and Rescue & Disaster Management offices on Mussel Road in Hermanus. They are open 24 hours a day.
