The 112-year-old bark, a three-masted ship, fell on its side during the attempt to place it back in the water, News24 reports. The incident occurred less than a month before the Bark EUROPA is scheduled to take on a 53-day sail training voyage to Horta, a Portuguese island city in the Azores, on 13 June.
In a statement, the sailing company assured the well-being of its crew and guests. ‘All crew members have safely left the ship, one sailor has been injured. He is currently in stable condition and receiving appropriate medical care.
‘The extent of the damage to the ship is still being assessed, and at this moment, we cannot determine the exact timeline for resuming our sailing operations. We want to assure you that our crew are working diligently to address and resolve the situation and to determine the necessary steps to move forward.
‘Please be assured that we are dedicated to getting our lady Bark EUROPA back to full operational capacity as soon as possible.’
