Tenanting is on the horizon for the City-enabled Goodwood social housing mega-project, set to offer rental opportunities to over 1000 residents and their families starting in November 2023.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim, inspected the construction progress of the Goodwood Station development, a project facilitated by the City of Cape Town.
This undertaking, valued at approximately R575 million, has garnered support from various stakeholders, including the Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA), DCI Community Housing Services, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) and the Infrastructure Fund.
The Goodwood Station project, located along the vital Voortrekker Road corridor, holds immense significance. It bridges Cape Town’s central business district with Bellville, strategically locating these affordable rental units near economic and transportation hubs.
Families with a combined monthly income of below R22 000 will find this development particularly advantageous.

Councillor Pophaim emphasised that approximately 6500 social housing opportunities and 50 land parcels are in the planning pipeline across the city.
Social housing plays a pivotal role in addressing housing needs in the city. Managed by accredited social housing institutions (SHIs), this approach ensures that rental income funds the day-to-day operation and upkeep of complexes, with no operational grants involved.
The goal is to offer affordable housing while enhancing access to social facilities and amenities.
Before aspiring tenants can apply for social housing, they must register on the City’s Housing Needs Register. The City may also provide discounted land to make social housing projects economically viable.
