Despite a barrage of verbal abuse, insults and threats, Animal Welfare Society of SA inspectors stood firm and rescued several ill-treated animals from a remorseless Tafelsig pet owner on Tuesday afternoon.

Their saddest discovery was a depressed adult Pitbull with mange.
Her swollen body was warm to the touch as a result of infection and months of lack of veterinary care.
They also freed a pair of illegally kept Speckled Rock Pigeons (Bosduiwe) confined in a tiny cage without food or water, as well as a fully grown hen held in ‘solitary confinement’ without food or water.

These birds are social animals, despite being kept in hopelessly inadequate enclosures and deliberately denied food and water. They thrive in groups, so being isolated and tormented must have exacerbated their pain and suffering to unimaginable proportions.
When the hen was presented with a bowl of water, she became frantic and nearly drowned herself as she emptied it.

Despite being visibly upset and abusive due to the inspectors’ presence and actions, the owner was severely admonished, issued a written warning, warned not to acquire any more pets, and informed that they would conduct spot checks to ensure compliance.
