Caracals have been on everyone’s minds lately. Adorable snaps of Caracal kittens roaming about Kirstenbosch Gardens had every Capetonian entranced a playful glimpse into the world of baby caracals has been slightly overshadowed by another sighting.
On September 30, an urban caracal was spotted strolling about Lion’s Head while Tourism Monitors were conducting a foot patrol in the area Kungeka Jene was fast enough to grab a picture before the feline trotted off.

The Cape Town metropolitan region, which includes the Table Mountain National Park, is a fragmented habitat for Caracals, with a likely population size of 48-64 Caracals. With Cape Town’s rapid urbanisation, caracal’s are the city’s largest remaining indigenous predator, and it’s comforting to see kittens being born, writes David Henning.
