130 people lost their homes after a fire broke out in Nyanga on Friday afternoon.
According to JP Smith, the City of Cape Town’s Mayco member for safety and security, approximately 55 structures were destroyed. One man sustained an injury to his leg and was taken to a nearby hospital.

He says 12 fire engines responded to the blaze and contained it in under three hours. On Saturday, the Disaster Risk Management Centre deployed staff to KTC in Nyanga to conduct assessments and coordinate humanitarian relief efforts.
In addition, the City’s Water and Sanitation Department and Eskom have been notified to restore damaged infrastructure, such as overhead electrical lines, water taps and ablution facilities.

By the end of March, over 700 individuals in Cape Town had lost their homes due to four fires. According to TimesLive, the fires tore through informal settlements in Mfuleni, Zwezwe, and two separate areas of Langa, resulting in hundreds being left homeless.
