In order to fill the void left by the bankrupt Comair, the South African airline Airlink announced a codeshare partnership with British Airways yesterday. This deal confirms the British airline’s return to the South African domestic market alongside its new partner.

After Comair went bankrupt in 2022, British Airways (BA) ceased domestic operations in South Africa, much to the dismay of local travellers.
Airlink and BA have now entered into a new agreement that will allow them to codeshare, which is a business arrangement in which one airline sells seats on a flight operated by the other and each airline uses its own flight number.
This means that passengers may now combine BA flights with those of its new partner, Airlink, to form a single travel itinerary. So, customers of British Airways will now be able to connect to their final destination on a single ticket when they are flying, for instance, from Cape Town to or through London.
According to News24, this move is meant to boost flight connectivity between the northern countries in Britain, Europe and the United States and over 15 destinations within Southern Africa.
“According to a statement issued on Wednesday, the two airlines believe the agreement will improve connectivity between the UK, Europe, North America and more than 15 destinations in Southern Africa, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia.”
Members of British Airways’ Executive Club can receive awards while travelling on Airlink flights that are codeshared with British Airways.
