Macassar police are investigating a case of carjacking and kidnapping after two Chinese nationals were targeted on Macassar Road at about 6pm on Thursday evening, 20 April 2023.

The male and female victims, believed to be the owners of a store in Macassar, were held up by suspects who kidnapped the female and fled the scene in the victim’s white Toyota Hilux bakkie.
The vehicle was later found abandoned on New Road in Macassar, and five suspects were arrested.
The female victim managed to escape and was found in Khayelitsha the following day.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, confirmed that five suspects appeared in the Somerset West Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 24 April 2023, on charges of carjacking and kidnapping of two Chinese nationals (male and female) in Macassar Road on Thursday evening, 20 April 2023.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are part of a police investigation.
The recent carjacking and kidnapping incident on Macassar Road has prompted concerns in the community, according to local ward councillor Peter Helfrich. The incident has raised alarm among residents and authorities, who are taking measures to address the issue.
He highlighted that a syndicate appears to be operating in and around the area, specifically targeting business people and demanding ransoms for the safe release of their employees and loved ones.
