The Cabinet has reacted strongly to the draft Western Cape Provincial Powers Bill, stating that the bill is against ‘the democratic spirit of building a unified South Africa’.

Khumbudz Ntshavheni, minister in the Presidency, says the Western Cape Provincial Powers Bill supersedes the country’s Constitution. ‘I have continually said from this podium that we will guide the Western Cape government until it gets through to them that there is one South Africa. There will never be two South Africas.’

The bill aims to get the national government to cease control of police, trade and public transport to the provincial government. According to EWN, this is the second time in under a month that the Western Cape government has been accused by the national government of operating by its own rules.
The Department of Transport accused the City of Cape Town of creating a by-law that was unconstitutional.
Ntshavheni says the Department of Justice will engage with the Western Cape government on a workable solution outside of their bill.
