Our timelines are flooded with stories relating to the K-9 Unit doing a stellar job of putting criminals behind bars while guide dogs continue to lead the blind with finesse.
More recently, a member of the City of Cape Town’s Metro Police K-9 Unit led officers to a carrier bag containing 120 units of heroin after a vehicle was searched, and if that doesn’t scream heroic, then we don’t know what will!
But there’s another group of heroes that we’re invested in, who has the superpower of helping to save the lives of the sick and injured. And they are called blood donors. That’s right, dogs can donate blood to help other pets if they meet the criteria.
Tygerberg Animal Hospital is looking for new blood donors to make a difference in the life of another pet. Your dog will need to meet the following criteria:
- 1-6 years of age.
- Be of a healthy weight for the breed.
- Be more than 25kg.
- Be healthy.
- Have up-to-date vaccinations, deworming and tick & flea treatments.
- Have a calm temperament.
- Not be on chronic medication.
- Not have had any previous blood transfusions.
