In its effort to clamp down on the illicit trade of counterfeit goods, Cape Town Police once again confiscated truckloads of clothing, watches, perfumes and other items worth millions of rands in Bellville on Wednesday morning.
This follows two similar operations that took place in the area in the past six months.

The multimillion-rand takedown was a joint operation involving members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Customs and Excise and brand protection units from various popular products.
According to police spokesperson Colonel André Traut, officers obtained a search warrant and descended on a shopping complex near the Bellville taxi rank at around 11am.
Upon the SAPS’ arrival, shopkeepers abandoned their stores and fled the scene. This, however, did not prevent the operation from continuing.
‘Although arrests are yet to be made, counterfeit goods valued at over R100 million as well as 30 vehicles which were used to store stock in the parking area were seized,’ said Traut.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner of Police Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, who characterised the trade in counterfeit goods as an act of economic sabotage against the country’s fiscal health, personally inspected the operation at the crime scene.
‘[Patekile] also issued a warning to building owners and landlords who are well aware of the illegal activities on their premises that they are also in the sights of SAPS,’ added Traut.
As the investigation continues, the value of the confiscated goods remains subject to change.
