The DA’s highest decision-making body is pursuing disciplinary action against Councillor Abdulkader Elyas. Elyas, a proportional ward councillor, stands accused of embellishing his credentials, claiming qualifications in business and medicine that institutions say he doesn’t possess.
The DA’s internal investigation has confirmed a case to answer, leading to Elyas’s suspension. This incident follows a series of qualification controversies within the party.
The DA’s federal council chairperson, Helen Zille, confirmed that Elyas is under scrutiny for misrepresenting his academic and professional background.
Allegations include false claims of attending the University of Cape Town for business and medical studies, something disputed by UCT and the Health Professionals Council of South Africa.
The unfolding scandal raises questions about the veracity of Elyas’s swift rise through the party ranks and concerns over his methods, including reportedly appearing in scrubs at a DA selection panel.

The incident echoes previous qualification controversies within the DA, such as the resignation of former Western Cape leader Bonginkosi Madikizela over misrepresented credentials.
The party emphasises the importance of honesty regarding qualifications, with past instances involving members like Marius Koen, Xanthea Limberg and JP Smith facing scrutiny.
‘We expect our candidates to be honest about their qualifications,’ Zille told News24.
The DA’s disciplinary process comprises two main stages, starting with an initial investigation. Elyas’s case has progressed beyond the investigation, affirming a case to answer.
The Federal Executive (FedEx) has opted for suspension based on the investigative report. The duration of the disciplinary hearing remains uncertain, but the party is aiming for an efficient resolution.
