The Law Enforcement Tourism Unit, headed by Alderman JP Smith, Mayco member for Safety and Security, has been monitoring the parking areas of various hiking trails to counter thefts from motor vehicles within the park.
During a patrol on Thursday evening at approximately 10pm, officials noticed a suspicious vehicle without a number plate. ‘Members kept the vehicle under observation but after the driver realised he was being watched, the vehicle made a hurried exit of the area,’ says Smith.

‘Officers pursued and brought the vehicle to a stop on Kloof Road. In the vehicle, officers found several car-breaking implements and property presumed to be stolen of which the driver could offer no reasonable explanation. The driver was subsequently arrested and taken into Cape Town Central SAPS.’
Smith urges the public to contact Cape Town Central police station if they recognise any of these items.
‘With our adjusted operational deployment, we are already seeing more results around the Table Mountain National Park. In the absence of qualified statistics at first, but now armed with a comprehensive dataset, we have adjusted the manner in which we deploy so as to be in the right place at the right time.’
