The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Wilderness duty crew responded to reports of a drowning in progress at a farm dam inland of Wilderness on Sunday, 19 February 2023.

The NSRI rescue swimmers, SA Police Services, the Police Dive Unit and Frontier Medix medical services rushed to the scene.
On arrival, rescue swimmers identified the exact position where a 10-year-old local child had last been seen in the water before disappearing underwater while swimming with friends.
The NSRI rescue swimmers located and recovered the child.
NSRI medics and paramedics helped with CPR, but when all attempts to bring the child back to life failed, the child was declared dead.
The body of the deceased was taken into the care of the government’s Forensic Pathology Services.
