The City of Cape Town has officially handed over newly completed Breaking New Ground (BNG) homes as part of its Gugulethu Infill housing project.
On 1 March, Human Settlements Mayoral Committee Member, Councillor Carl Pophaim, joined officials to mark the occasion and to assess the project’s progress firsthand.
The Gugulethu Infill housing project, spanning two sites at Erf 8448 in Gugulethu and Mau Mau in Nyanga, has faced various challenges in recent years.
However, with the City now fully taking over the project, rapid progress towards completion is expected.

Councillor Pophaim expressed his delight at celebrating the handover of homes to deserving beneficiaries, acknowledging the resilience of all involved despite the project’s obstacles.
He emphasised the City’s commitment to providing housing opportunities to those in need, with the Gugulethu Infill project set to deliver a total of 1004 homes to qualifying beneficiaries and their families.
Of these, 570 units will be provided at the Gugulethu site and 434 at Mau Mau. Despite the complexities faced, 131 units at the Mau Mau site have already been successfully completed and handed over to date.
Moving forward, the City reaffirmed its dedication to completing the project, ensuring that rightful beneficiaries are swiftly settled into their new homes.
The housing allocation process adheres to the City’s Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register, ensuring fairness and transparency in housing distribution.
