A total of 574 applications for electrification were received, and as of December 2022, 173 connections had been successfully established. The remaining 401 beneficiaries have also been electrified, and are currently in the final step of the switch-on process.
Nearly all informal settlements within the metropolitan area have been connected to electricity provided by the city and on land owned by the city, whenever feasible.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Councillor Beverley van Reenen, and other dignitaries attended a recent switch-on in the area.
‘We are so pleased to be switching on the remaining 401 planned connections in this area. The City set aside almost R4,5 million to ensure the success of this project and it is gratifying to see it become a reality. Families in this community can now feel more secure with access to the basic electricity services which the City provides.’
‘In keeping with our theme this year of Doing More, I am delighted to announce that in this financial year since July 2022, the City electrified more than 2 012 homes. These connections to the electricity grid include formal subsidised housing, informal settlements, infills and backyarder connections for informal and backyarder connections, at a cost of approximately R24 million.’
‘Many thousands of people have benefitted from these projects and our ongoing commitment to always doing more is underscored by our investment in infrastructure which makes life easier for residents and unlocks opportunities for their children to thrive,’ said Councillor Van Reenen.
