The reconstruction project follows torrential rains and gale-force winds that caused parts of the road to be washed away. The effort is being done in collaboration between the West Coast District Municipality and the Cederberg Local Municipality.
As per IOL, the work includes repairing the main road and relocating and repairing riverbanks. Heinrich Robertson, West Coast District Municipality spokesperson, says temporary measures have been put in place until Saturday so that people don’t have to use an alternative route when travelling in the area.
‘The damage to the roads has also delayed the process of offering relief to community members whose homes were affected by the floods.’
‘Next week we will be in full swing of building proper roads and all other structures that were affected or damaged.’
He adds that although the electricity crisis has been addressed by Eskom, electricity will not be switched on in all parts of the town simultaneously. Instead, the electrical team will switch the power on in phases so as to prevent unplanned outages.

Boffie Strydom, executive mayor of the West Coast District Municipality, says the municipality continues to support all efforts to restore and repair the damaged infrastructure.
‘It is important that we restore access to and from Citrusdal as it will kickstart the local economy and give communities access to services they require.’
