The workshop titled ‘Unlocking the Water Utility AMI Journey’ aligns with the City’s plans to implement smart water meters, as Councillor Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, highlighted an investment of R25 million in the current financial year towards advancing the smart water metering programme.
Consultants have been approached to assist in the design phase, paving the way for tendering and rollout stages.
The initiative seeks to introduce smart meters that will enable customers to track water consumption, contributing to Cape Town’s vision of becoming a water-sensitive city.

Through regular readings and timely notifications about potential leaks, residents will have more control over their water usage, ultimately leading to more predictable water bills and reduced wastage.
The ambitious 15-year expenditure plan, exceeding R5 billion, anticipates widespread implementation across the city. While the initial focus will be on business and industrial customers, the project aims to eventually encompass the majority of residential customers by 2037.
For those interested, the workshop includes panel discussions with international experts and offers limited ticket sales to the public. Detailed information can be found here.
