The Sea Point Promenade is one of the most visited locations in Cape Town, as locals and tourists journey through the area to make use of the breathtaking view it has to offer. However, there have now been talks that the City of Cape Town (COCT) wants to limit the movement of cyclists and the occasional bike riders on the Promenade.
According to News 24, a proposal was tabled during a transport portfolio committee meeting on Thursday, August 5, indicating that cyclists would only have access to the Promenade from a specific time of the day. If the COCT were to be successful in implementing these plans, cyclists would not be allowed during the week from 11:00 am, as well as on Saturdays and public holidays.
This decision has left many people upset as the city is also looking to promote a healthier way of transportation.
@CityofCT so much for promoting cycling for transport & health?!? Opening up the Promenade for bikes & skaters was a great move. Why a reversal now? @ofuturecities

The COCT however responded to the plans indicating that none of the proposals in the said report has been adopted as the City’s Portfolio Committee on Transport referred the report back to the local Subcouncil for further investigation and discussion, and importantly, public participation.
The City will take input from experts, from global best practice and importantly, stakeholders and the public, to ensure that the promenade is utilised and safe and that it remains one of Cape Town’s iconic spaces.
