The funeral of little Tazne van Wyk was held yesterday morning (Feburary 29) at Moddderdam Cemetery in Belhar.

Thousands gathered to say goodbye to the young girl who was murdered and found in a storm water drain near Worcester after being kidnapped from her home in Elsies River.

The funeral started with a private viewing at the family home before the procession left for the Goodwood Uniting Reformed Church. Extra chairs and TV equipment were put up outside the church to accommodate all the mourners.

Police Minister General Bheki Cele was in attendance, as well as Deputy Minister of Women, Youth and People with Disabilities, Hlengiwe Mkhize and Cape Town mayor, Dan Plato, along with Nomafrench  Mbombo, the provincial MEC for Health.

“Our children are getting raped and killed by their own mothers and fathers. We are bleeding inside, we are angry because our children can’t play outside. The system has failed Tazne,” said Mbombo in an address to the mourners.

Footage of the funeral have been put up on social media. People across the country were heartbroken at the murder of another South African child.
