A vote of no confidence in former Kannaland mayor Jeffery Donson has succeeded on Wednesday, 19 January.
This comes after it was revealed that Donson was convicted of statutory rape in 2008, raping a 15-year-old girl during his tenure as mayor, reports EWN.
Donson and his deputy mayor, Werner Meshoe refused to step down after the criminal allegations came to light. Donson, who is the leader of the Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa (Icosa), refused to face the music, choosing instead to ignore the mounting criticism and calls from political parties and the public to step down.
As a result of the rape conviction, the ANC pulled out of the coalition deal with Icosa, reports IOL.
Following this, members of the Kannaland council brought a motion of no confidence against him, ousting him as mayor, along with deputy mayor Meshoe.
Meshoe has also been convicted of fraud and was later fired as a teacher due to sexual misconduct with regard to a learner.
The ANC’s Nicolaas Valentyn has been elected as the new mayor.
