A couple from the Northern Cape has allegedly passed away after consuming their own homemade beer during lockdown.

The couple died in Port Nolloth over the weekend and two bottles of homemade brew were seized from their residence for further testing.

According to Brigadier Mohale Ramatseba, speaking to DispatchLive, the 42-year-old woman died first and was found in her flat. Her partner, a 54-year-old man, was found seriously ill and later died in hospital.

Police are still investigating their deaths but all evidence thus far is pointing towards the home-brewed beer.

This comes after South Africans across the nation have taken up brewing alcohol at home when the sale of alcohol was prohibited under lockdown restrictions.
