Cape Town’s Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis has welcomed news that the National State of Disaster will soon come to an end, stating that it is “long overdue.”
As travel continues to pour into the Mother City after two years of travel restrictions due to the pandemic, Hill-Lewis indicated in a statement that the restrictions implemented by the government have held back economic recovery.
The comments by the Mayor come after the government allowed South Africans 48 hours to comment on its proposed Cabinet decision, which could see the end of the National State of Disaster but introduce new measures that would help navigate the aftermath of the pandemic, as per IOL.
According to Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, the new regulations would be gazetted before citizens would have 48 hours to comment, which would then see the government assess the answers and make its decision.
The final decision is likely to be made before May 5, which could be an indication that an extension on the current National State of Disaster is on the cards.
Citizens can find out more about how they can comment on the decision here.
