They were arrested by specialised police units over the weekend.
Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes and his friend Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane were fatally shot in Florida Road, Durban, nearly two months ago.
It was initially reported that at least three men were detained following a breakthrough in the case on Sunday.
‘According to a source close to the investigation into the rapper’s killing, the suspects were arrested in Cape Town and were in police custody,’ IOL reported.
However, neither police management in KZN nor the Western Cape has confirmed the events of Sunday, where the first three suspects were taken into police custody and handcuffed at a Cape Town shopping centre.
According to IOL, sources close to the investigation stated that three of the men were apprehended at Erica Square in Belhar, an area known for its gang activity.
Netwerk24 reports that one of the suspects has been linked to a string of taxi killings in Empangeni, in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Following a sting of crimes in KZN, the suspects were traced to the Western Cape. The investigation led police officials to Belhar, where they monitored the gang’s movements before apprehending them.
They also found a white Mercedes-Benz, believed to have been used as a getaway car on the night of AKA and Tibz’s murder.
It is further alleged that the shooters travelled along Peter Mokaba Ridge and into Cato Crest following the shooting.
The car was later recovered in Mayville, and not in uMlazi as reported earlier.
It was then reported on Tuesday that two more men had been taken in for questioning.
It is understood that the five have not been formally charged as yet but that they will be be travelling to KZN for questioning.
The incident occurred on the evening of Friday, 10 February when AKA and Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane were shot dead in Durban.
They were gunned down after AKA had been to Wish restaurant for food and drinks ahead of a scheduled birthday celebration performance at Yugo, a Durban night club.
