The rugby community and fans across the nation are anxiously following the news of former Springbok flyhalf, Derick Hougaard, as he fights for his life in the intensive care unit of a Pretoria hospital.
The 40-year-old sportsman was found unconscious by his girlfriend, singer Nadine, on the morning of Saturday, 10 June 10 and has remained in a coma since then.
The latest update on Hougaard’s condition reveals a challenging situation. Nadine noticed that his hands had turned blue and her attempts to wake him proved futile.
Concerned for his well-being, she promptly called for an ambulance, but it took approximately an hour and a half to stabilise him. Hougaard’s lungs are currently not functioning properly, requiring him to be on a ventilator.
Visiting restrictions in the intensive care unit have made it even more difficult for his loved ones. Only one person can be with him at a time, adding to the already traumatic experience for those close to him. Witnessing Hougaard hooked up to multiple medical devices and knowing that he is fighting for his life is a distressing sight.
At present, only immediate family members are allowed to visit him, as doctors give him a 50% chance of awakening from his coma. Friends of Hougaard express hope that a toxicology report will soon shed light on the cause of this alarming incident, providing answers and guidance for his medical team.
Hougaard has proudly represented the Bulls in over 100 matches across various competitions from 2002 to 2008. Known affectionately as the ‘Liefling’ of Loftus, he played a pivotal role during the team’s golden era in Pretoria.
Following his retirement from rugby, Hougaard explored other sports, trying his hand at a career in the NFL. He also engaged in a celebrity boxing match alongside rock musician Francois van Coke. Additionally, he has reportedly been working on a documentary about his life, showcasing his journey beyond the rugby field.
As the rugby community rallies around one of their own, thoughts and prayers are with Derick Hougaard, his family and loved ones during this challenging time.
