Winter is well on its way in the Mother City and with it comes wet roads and an increased risk of road-related incidents.
In light of the changing seasons, City of Cape Town’s MMC for safety and security, JP Smith, sends the following message to the motoring public: ‘Give that accelerator a break, drive with headlights on at all times, be patient and courteous, and most importantly, steer clear of the bar’.

In the past week, the City’s enforcement agencies made 408 arrests and issued 60 889 fines for various transgressions.
According to the stats, traffic officers recorded 54 043 violations, of which 31 773 were for speeding, 266 were vehicle impoundments and 889 were for executing warrants of arrest.
Additionally, a total of 75 motorists were arrested this past week, including 58 arrests for drunk driving, eight for reckless and negligent driving and nine others for various other transgressions.
‘Drunk driving arrests doubled week on week, and again, we had well over 50 000 traffic transgressions recorded,’ said Smith.
The number of arrests for the previous week was 36, with 28 motorists arrested for driving under the influence.
‘Speeding, or driving impaired is fine, until you crash and hurt yourself, or even worse, someone else,’ added Smith. ‘Driving is challenging enough in good weather conditions.’
Meanwhile, City of Cape Town law enforcement officers made 263 arrests and issued 4 133 notices, with metro police officers making 70 arrests and issuing 2 713 fines.
