Community Health Centres (CHC) in the Western Cape saw nearly 119 000 emergency cases between 1 December 2023 and 1 January 2024.

This is according to Western Cape MEC for health and wellness, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, who visited the Gugulethu CHC on 1 January. ‘This CHC alone is in the top five busiest trauma facilities in the province and dealt with more than 200 of these cases in this past weekend.’
She adds that 27% of all cases reported between December and January were due to trauma.

The MEC also stopped by the Mowbray Maternity Hospital during her rounds on 1 January, noting that a total of 38 babies were born by 1pm at this unit – 24 girls and 14 boys.
