In an update received from Western Cape Mobility Department’s director of traffic and road safety Dilin Lakay, SpillTech confirmed that chemicals, nitric and amino acids were packed together in the hazmat truck, resulting in the subsequent leak.
The update added that two trucks will be arriving at the scene to separate the two hazardous materials for safety.
While the area has been cleared of spillage, the toll gates and tunnel continues to be closed off and motorists are advised to use Old Du Toits Kloof Pass R101.

Motorists travelling on the N1 outside Paarl experienced heavy congestion as the Huguenot Tunnel was closed in both directions due to a hazmat incident.

According to Western Cape Mobility Department’s director of traffic and road safety Dilin Lakay, nitric acid began leaking from a hazmat truck at the Huguenot Toll plaza around 12:15pm on Saturday.
Lakay said due to the dangerous nature of the hazardous chemical, the road has to be closed in both directions formed a health and safety hazard for motorists driving past, who may end up inhaling the acid.

Highway Patrol officer Francois Carstens alerted the department to the incident.
At 5pm, the Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services, who responded to the scene, confirmed that the area is under control and the chemicals have been cleaned, however the Huguenot toll gate and tunnel will remain closed until further notice.
Motorists and heavy motor vehicles are urged to use alternative route via Old Du Toits Kloof Pass.
