A 41-year-old hiker was killed after slipping and falling on Friday afternoon. Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) teams and volunteers responded to Jonkershoek Nature Reserve near Stellenbosch after a visiting hiker fell off a trail.

The hiker and his partner had hiked up to the Tweede Waterval (Second Waterfall) earlier in the day and were returning to their car when he slipped off the trail and fell about 40 metres.
Passing hikers dashed down the trail to sound the alarm, dialling the emergency number – 021 937 0300 – as soon as they had signal.

Wilderness Search and Rescue teams from Cape Town and Stellenbosch, along with Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness EMS medics, CapeNature Rangers, and Stellenbosch Fire & Rescue personnel, were driven into the reserve and quickly hiked up to find the fallen hiker.

Unfortunately, they discovered that the hiker had died as a result of the fall.
His remains were placed on a stretcher and carefully raised back up to the hiking trail before being transported down the 5km path and handed over to SAPS officers.
