According to Alderman Smith, 1 500 long-distance public transportation vehicles were inspected before their departure, and 48 motorists were arrested and removed from the roads for driving while intoxicated.

He thanked the law enforcement agencies on social media, but added that their work was not done; the next challenge will be the influx of motorists returning home.

He said:

‘Please exercise patience. You can get home a few minutes later, as long as you arrive safely. Don’t be distracted. If you need to read that Whatsapp message and reply, rather pull over. Don’t be distracted by your cell phone at intersections either; you become easy pickings for criminals on the prowl.’

‘Let’s get home safely and tick these holidays off as ones with only pleasant memories,’ he concluded.
