An alleged mugger was arrested in Kloof Street after a hiker was threatened at knifepoint yesterday.

According to Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, the Law Enforcement Tourism Unit was on patrol, accompanied by members of the Metro Police, who were providing visible patrols on all the major destinations, routes and activities frequented by tourists in the CBD and surrounding area when they received information of a hiker that had been threatened at knifepoint.

‘Given the description, members scoured the area until locating the suspect walking on Kloof Street.’
‘In his possession were two knives, also matching the description given earlier by the victim.’
A 25-year-old male was arrested and handed over to SAPS for further investigation.

‘Again, our small but highly efficient Law Enforcement Tourism Unit continues to bring results,’ said Smith. ‘Part of their daily activities include the monitoring of the hiking trails and parking areas in close proximity, patrolling popular tourist destinations like the District Six area, as well as the monitoring of ATM’s of the area in an effort to prevent fraudsters and card scammers.’

He added that the tourism sector was a vital and valuable aspect of the CBD area, not only for the numerous jobs created from the hospitality industry but for the many other SME’s and entrepreneurs that rely on the influx of tourists entering into Cape Town.
‘It is therefore imperative that Cape Town retains its world-class reputation as a popular tourist destination,’ said Smith.
