The City of Cape Town’s Mayco Member for Safety and Security JP Smith says the City’s Safety and Security Directorate will be on high alert this weekend, especially in public spaces.
According to Smith, the good weather predicted for this weekend and the release of the matric results on Friday, 21 January will cause many young people to celebrate or visit open spaces.
Smith said, the statistics on alcohol consumption in public spaces, have once again shown a very high level of disregard for the law after law enforcement agencies confiscated 12 366 bottles of alcohol, amounting to just under 7 000 litres. 754 bottles fewer than what was confiscated in the 2019/20 festive season.
The Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, have also recently applauded enforcement activities carried out by the Western Cape Liquor Authority over the Festive Season to ensure that liquor traders complied with the conditions of their liquor licences.
Fritz said a total of 300 inspections were conducted, with 143 of these inspections focusing specifically on underage drinking. “These inspections were conducted in a total of 27 areas across the province, including Bellville, Caledon, Constantia, Delft, Grassy Park, Sea Point and Wolseley,” Fritz indicated.

According to Schafer the fact that results were achieved after two years of COVID 19 makes it more remarkable as the Western Cape retained its third position in South Africa.
The Western Cape’s Ulrich Le Roux from Hoër Jongenskool in Paarl was also announced as the top achiever of the 2021 Matric Class in South Africa.
