Alderman JP Smith, the City’s Mayco member for Safety and Security, says law enforcement officers of the Metals Theft Unit responded to a call for assistance from LEAP officers in Khayelitsha, who had stopped a Volkswagen motor vehicle loaded with copper cables.
‘The Metals theft unit members responded to the complaint and upon arrival, it was established that the copper cables recovered [were] bare overhead copper cables relating to essential infrastructure,’ says Smith.
Two occupants of the vehicle were arrested in terms of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18 of 2015 and for the possession of stolen property.
‘The copper cables [were] later confirmed to be the property of the City of Cape Town,’ says Smith, adding that the value of the cables excludes the City’s cost to replace the damaged and or stolen infrastructure.
The vehicle was also impounded.
