The Western Cape’s provincial minister of infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, has allocated a budget of R24 million for the implementation of solar geyser installations, with the aim of distributing 976 solar geysers across various human settlement projects.

As part of this initiative, the Vlakkeland project will provide solar panel geysers to the households of 53 beneficiaries living with disabilities.
The goal is to ensure that these households benefit from sustainable and eco-friendly energy solutions.
The pilot energy mitigation initiative encompasses several key projects, including Metro Grounds in George and Railton in Swellendam. Once these projects are successfully completed, a total of 976 indigent households will reportedly reap the rewards of enhanced energy access.
Simmers expressed his excitement about the progress of this pilot project, stressing the importance of exploring alternative solutions to combat load shedding, especially after experiencing one of the coldest winters in recent memory.
‘I am excited to note that the pilot project is being implemented, with installations currently underway. Having experienced one of the coldest winters in recent years, it is imperative that we explore alternative means to mitigate load shedding while ensuring that our most vulnerable citizens are not left behind,’ he said.

Simmers underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring that vulnerable citizens are not left in the dark and commended the Western Cape Government for pioneering innovative solutions for its residents.
The installation of the 53 solar panel geysers at Vlakkeland remains on schedule for completion by the end of 2023.
The Western Cape Government stated that this initiative promises not only a significant improvement in the well-being and dignity of the beneficiaries but also a meaningful step forward in the pursuit of environmental responsibility.
