A 21-year-old man suffered a fatal gunshot wound at the IPotsoyi Spring Music Festival near Philadelphia on October 20, 2018.

The IPotsoyi festival is an annual music festival that features leading and up-coming local musical acts. The festival was scheduled to take place from 12pm – 12am but concluded earlier due to the incident.

According to police reports, the shooting took place at Vanschoordrift Road within the confines of the festival arena. The shooting is reported to have transpired at approximately 11pm on Saturday night.

South African Police Services (SAPS) spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk, indicated the police found the male victim with a gunshot wound.

“Upon their arrival, they found a 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his body,” he said.

The victim, unfortunately, succumbed to the bullet wounds and passed away.

The IPotsoyi Festival took to social media to announce that the event will no longer continue as a result of the incident.

The festival has been running for a period of five years and is based on creating an inclusive and expressive musical platform for the city.

Issuing a statement, IPotsoyi Festival said they try their best to ensure the safety of all their attendees at the event.

“Despite all challenges, we have consistently managed to work hand in hand with the City of Cape Town and our service providers to ensure a safe and secure environment, to the best of our ability,” the festival said in a statement.

IPotsoyi Festival has issued their condolences to the family of the victim.

“Above All, our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the deceased.”

Police services have opened up a case of murder for further investigations.

“Circumstances are under investigation with no arrests so far,” Van Wyk said.
